Epidural steroid injections are often a treatment method that is used with sciatic leg pain, and sometimes low back pain problems by medical physicians. The treatment effectiveness and degree of relief is in debate in the scientific literature. This recent study looked at all the studies that Have been performed on his procedure. They concluded “…the small size of the treatment effect challenges the clinical utility of this procedure.”

Treatment of sciatica with chiropractic and physical medicine procedures we do at our clinic is often very successful. In some cases I do refer out for epidural steroid injections if the patient is not responding to our treatment within a reasonable timeframe. What must be remembered is this is attempting to treat a symptom, the inflammation, not necessarily the cause, underlying mechanical problem.
